Nigella sativa as a Potential Phytotherapy for COVID-19

  • Nigella sativa (NS) is a plant that is used as a food supplement and for medicine in various cultures. NS contains antiviral compounds and previous studies have demonstrated the anti-microbial, anti-inflammatory, and immunostimulatory properties of the plant.
  • Researchers conducted a literature search on the potential of using NS as phytotherapy for COVID-19 and found eight in-silico studies that demonstrated the potential benefits of NS as phytotherapy for COVID-19. Specifically, several compounds found in NS, such as Thymohydroquinone, Nigelledine, Hederagenin, α-Hederin, and Thymoquinone, exhibited a moderate to high affinity for SARS-CoV-2 proteins and enzymes, indicating that they may have potential to prevent SARS-CoV-2 from attaching to host cell receptors and replicating.
