Continuing with the definition of markers for nontraditional students:

- race/ethnicity (note that Hispanics, Native Americans, Blacks, and Pacific Islanders are considered under-represented and international students are not included)
- the age of the student when enrolled (age 20 and above)
- transfer students who came to U of Michigan from a different university
- socioeconomic status of students (usually poor students are nontraditional)

In trying to define nontraditional students as part of their research study, the report notes that there are many potential definitions of what could be considered nontraditional. Aspects of what could be considered nontraditional can also intersect and pose challenges for the student's academic success (i.e. low-income African American students vs. high-income African American students; the latter tend to have higher GPAs).

These are the markers that the paper has determined to include nontraditional students. Given the intersectionality of nontraditional aspects, students can have one marker but not the other.

- gender: male or female (the paper has apparently excluded students of the LGBT community)
- single parent families (students who live with only one of their parents/guardians)
- part-time students (students who take less than 12 credits per full term or less than 6 credits per half term)
- veteran students (students who completed military service before enrolling)

- in-state vs. out-of-state students (nontraditional usually referring to out-of-state students, such as international students)
- athlete students (part of the NCAA) are considered nontraditional 
- the student's citizenship status (international students are considered nontraditional)
- first-generation students (first in their family to go to college, usually part of the nontraditional category)
