Northern blots are used to visualize RNA by transfering RNA to a membrane from an agarose gel. The RNA is separated by charge on the agarose gel and then transfered to a membrane by charge. This technique is commonly used to observe mRNA expression from tissues.

Northern Blot

Agarose gel electrophoresis is a way of separating DNA or RNA that are different sizes. Because DNA is negatively charged, it "runs" to the positive electrode through the agarose matrix. The agarose matrix causes larger pieces of DNA to run slower while smaller DNA runs faster which separates the DNA based on size. A DNA Ladder that contains known standard sizes of DNA is run on the gel to use to compare your sample.
