Observational Method of Emotional Regulation

The observational method is often used in experimental (laboratory) studies on ER. Participants are typically instructed to use a particular ER strategy in response to a standardized, emotion-eliciting stimulus (e.g., a video clip). Researchers then observe the effects of strategy use on participants’ subsequent emotions, cognitions, or physiological responses.
