In most cases, selfish mining is successful by the share of the honest miners who decide to continue with the block. The outcome is also affected by the selfish miner's behavior of building two blocks on top of a sequence in order to increase its market share in the largest chain.

After completing a cryptographic puzzle, most cryptocurrencies implement block reporting. Miners can delay this reporting to quickly work on another block while leaving the other miners to the older one and exhausting their computing speed in a process called selfish mining. Concerns have been raised about how selfish mining could be exploited to create a dominant position in the mining market.
