According to ODMAP an 18% increase in overdoses were seen in the early months of the pandemic. During social isolation people become more stressed and make impractical decisions which lead them to increasing alcohol consumption and drug intake.

Social isolation during the pandemic cut off access to typical coping outlets such as gyms and other recreational activities. With these options unavailable, people turned instead to substances readily available at home, such as prescription medications or alcohol, contributing to increased drug and alcohol misuse.
