Pathogenisis of Viral Pneumonia

During infection, a viral surface protein causes host cells to fuse and form multinucleated giant cells called syncytia. There are no specific antiviral therapies or vaccines available for viral pneumonia. In adults, these infections tend to resolve within 1 or 2 weeks. Infections in infants, however, can be life-threatening. Viral Pneumonia is highly contagious and can be spread through respiratory droplets from coughing and sneezing, and can survive for a long time on environmental surfaces.
