Through his experiments, Pavlov concluded that an organism has two fundamental types of responses to its environment. The first is the unconditioned (unlearned) response, which is an innate reflex. The second is the conditioned (learned) response, which is acquired through association.

To objectively investigate the 'psychic secretions' in dogs, Pavlov designed a series of carefully controlled experiments. In these studies, he demonstrated that dogs could be trained to salivate in response to various neutral stimuli, such as the sound of a bell, a light, or a touch on the leg, after these stimuli were repeatedly associated with food.
