Period vs. Cohort Life Expectancy

Life expectancy can be measured in two ways. 'Period' life expectancy, the most common metric, calculates the average lifespan for a hypothetical group if they experienced the mortality rates of a specific, single year throughout their lives. 'Cohort' life expectancy tracks the actual mortality experience of a specific group of people born in the same year from birth until their deaths. Period life expectancy is a snapshot of current health conditions, while cohort life expectancy is a historical record.
