The persistent search bar remains visible at all times. When the search field receives focus, the search experience expands to fill the screen: historical search suggestions may optionally appear below the text field, and the user can type a query or select a suggestion. Search results are then displayed below the search bar. Tapping the 'Up arrow' releases focus, dismisses the suggestions, and returns the search bar to its unfocused state.
