Persister cells have a slow metabolic rate, and can survive for longer periods of time on less available nutrients. These have important implications for chronic diseases that do not respond to antibiotic treatment. 

The death phase occurs when the number of dying cells exceeds the living. It is marked by an exponential decline in the number of cells due to lack of nutrients and accumulation of waste.
