Thorstein Veblen

Thorstein Veblen (1857–1929) was a US sociologist and economist. He is credited with coining the term 'conspicuous consumption' to describe the practice of purchasing items to signal social and economic standing. His analysis specifically explained this behavior as an attempt by people of lesser means to imitate the consumption habits of the wealthy.
