Phase 1 Limitations (Crowdsourcing Complex Engineering Tasks)

The sample size of the graduate students was small compared to the crowd workers, as there were only 19 graduate students who completed the study compared to 215 crowd workers. Additionally, the results of the participants’ responses may have been influenced by a major difference between the two experimental groups: the crowd workers were allowed to quit if they were not interested, whereas the graduate students were assigned the tasks by their professor. Therefore, the crowd workers may have been more motivated to do well due to their own interest, despite their lack of formal training and education. On the other hand, the graduate students may not have been as enthusiastic to complete the tasks as the crowd workers. As a result of this major difference between the two groups, the crowd worker group naturally “filtered out” the uninterested participants, while the graduate students were not “filtered out” based on disinterest.
