Concept

Phase 1 Method (Crowdsourcing Complex Engineering Tasks)

The crowd workers were given a tutorial that taught them how to use Virtual Wind Tunnel and recognize faulty simulation results. On the other hand, the graduate students were more knowledgeable of the concepts involved in the simulation due to their engineering backgrounds, so they did not need a tutorial. The participants were then asked to evaluate graphs produced by Virtual Wind Tunnel. Each set of simulation data involved parameters including oncoming winds, building geometries, size of cells in the simulation domain, and length of time. Some of the simulations produced faulty results that were invalid for use in further analysis. The participants were each shown three items: one image and two graphs produced by a simulation. They were assessed on whether they could distinguish if the simulation was valid or invalid based on those three items.
