Phase Plate

In a phase contrast microscope, the objective contains a phase plate that features a phase ring. Light traveling directly from the illuminator passes through the phase ring, while light refracted or reflected by the specimen passes through the rest of the plate. This separation causes the waves traveling through the ring to be about one-half of a wavelength out of phase with the waves passing through the plate.
