A Picture exchange communication system (PECS) is a form of early intervention that is geared towards children who are unable to speak effectively. This method consists of teaching children to indicate what they want by giving a picture as a means of communicating their wants and needs.

WHAT ARE EARLY INTERVENTION STRATEGIES FOR AUTISM?

Occupation Therapy (OT) is geared toward helping kids work on their social, cognitive, fine, and gross motor skills. The chief objective of OT is to enable children to live independently through instruction on life skills such as eating, bathing, and dressing oneself. Therapists use multiple methods to help foster and implement these skills including adaptive and play strategies. 

Occupational Therapy for Autistic Children

A portion of autistic children have difficulty communicating as a means of indicating their wants and needs through speaking. Those unable to effectively communicate their wants and needs have a tendency to resort to aggressive behaviors. Sign language can help aid such difficulties by pairing a spoken word with a visual of that same word to help autistic children foster that connection, and subsequently effective communication.

The objectives of Speech therapy are to enhance communication skills. This form of therapy helps ASD-diagnosed youth better convey their needs and wants, as well as understand others conversationally.
