Placental Transfer

During pregnancy, most substances a pregnant person ingests—including food, liquid, and medication—travel through the placenta to the developing fetus, which is why the phrase "eating for two" is commonly used. Because the fetus shares this environment, exposure to harmful substances can result in life-long developmental effects for the child.
