Scholars are divided in whether religious groups reflect and/or reinforce politically-relevant divisions that could affect which party or government group is in charge. This could end in a  possible regime change.

- Some scholars believe that there is a strong link between Christianity and the democratic movement
- Religious groups strongly favor in-group believers then out-group non-believers thus they are more likely to support political officials which subscribe to their religion.
- Religions can be seen as a powerful political force 
- Religions have a past of violence and some believe that some religions (doctrine)  may use their doctrine in order to legitimate the use of violence
