Do Novakian concept maps split the learner's attention such that they have to mentally integrate some parts of it? Can it be caused by representing logical relationship by geometric shapes which might seem different from words (i.e., what effect would a purely lexical concept map have)? Is it because of the graphical split between branches and/or pages if the concept map is large?

Novakian concept maps lowers the intrinsic cognitive load because it presents the knowledge in a more readily acceptable manner which lessons the requirement for the brain to form schemas in understanding the relation of elements of information provided in passages; however, it creates a greater extraneous cognitive load (i.e., the overhead of extraneous cognitive load increases at a higher rate than the decrease of intrinsic cognitive load when the concept map gets larger). Consider the listed effects.

Possible Cause: Split-Attention Effect

Are some elements of the Novakian concept map redundant? I can't think of any. Also, I don't think so because it would not increase with the size of the map, and a small concept map is better than linear text. However, smaller concept maps can be affected by the element interactivity effect, but even a small concept map would probably be larger than the threshold of the element interactivity effect.
