It is possible that the study design is the reason why there was no association between placement of negation increased belief. Specifically, it is possible that the close proximity of the negation to the message did not allow enough time for the reader to employ distrustful encoding.

While it was hypothesized that placing negation first in fact checking would decrease the likelihood of dissociating the negation and the core message by strengthening the associations of the schema-plus-tag model and employing distrustful encoding, this was found to not be the case. No matter what the placement of the negation, people forget the link at similar rates.
