Potential Biases of Likert Scales in Surveys

  1. Acquiescence Bias (Agreement Bias): the tendency of a respondent to agree with others. Demonstrates human priming (framing effect) to respond or select a positive response option. Diminish bias by alternating positively phrased statements --> negatively phrased statements.

  2. Social Desirability Bias: respondent provides an answer that is or will be regarded favorably by others. Fear disagreement reflects them badly. Diminish bias by not asking respondents for name/identification info.
