Potential Mechanisms of SARS-CoV-2-induced Cytokine Storm

The increased production of cytokines is a result of many mechnisms, for example:

  • CD14+CD16+ monocytes are triggered by activated pathogenic T helper cells to release IL-6 (a major component of the development of the cytokine storm)
  • An increase in a subpopulation of CD14+IL-1β+ monocytes may increase IL-1β levels
  • Th17 cells that produce IL-17 go on to recruit more monocytes/macrophages and neutrophils, which then triggers other cytokine cascades
  • Monocytes/macrophages may produce additional inflammatory cytokines
  • Eosinophils can may release a large amount of cytokines, including IL-6
