Potential negative consequences of COVID-19 for mental health for the General Public

  • Most surveys of the general public show increased symptoms of depression, anxiety, and stress related to COVID-19
  • There have been reports of phobic anxiety, panic buying, and binge-watching television
  • social media exposure has been associated with increased odds of anxiety and combined depression with anxiety
  • May increase risky behavior (e.g. online gambling)
  • Increased alcohol sales and alcohol use in the home may increase alcohol use disorders and domestic violence
  • increased risk of physical and sexual abuse at home during the pandemic
  • In places with scarce resources, the pandemic could also exacerbate mental health conditions and further limit health services
