A key focus of routine prenatal care is monitoring pregnancies for signs and symptoms of preeclampsia. If the diagnosis is made, the definitive treatment is delivery to prevent development of maternal or fetal complications from disease progression. Delivery leads to eventual resolution of the disease. Timing of delivery is based on a combination of factors, including disease severity, maternal and fetal condition, and gestational age.

Preeclampsia is a progressive, multisystem disorder characterized by new-onset hypertension and end-organ dysfunction in the last half of pregnancy. Progression from nonsevere (previously referred to as "mild") to severe on the disease spectrum may be gradual or rapid.

signs and symptoms that can occur include visual disturbances, headache, epigastric pain, thrombocytopenia, and abnormal liver function. These clinical manifestations result from mild to severe microangiopathy of target organs, including the brain, liver, kidney, and placenta.Potential serious maternal sequelae include pulmonary edema, cerebral hemorrhage, hepatic failure, renal failure, and death. The fetal/neonatal burden of disease results from placental hypoperfusion and the frequent need for preterm delivery.
