In many rural areas, primary care physicians and law enforcement officers are often the first professionals encountered by people needing mental health care, effectively acting as first-line mental health providers, even though they do not have the specialized training of a mental health professional who would often be better equipped to provide care (Ivey, Scheffler, & Zazzali, 1998).
