"Privacy Nudges for Social Media: An Exploratory Facebook Study" Types of Nudges

A Chrome browser plugin was used to present users with the following types of nudges:

  • Picture Nudge: Profile pictures of those who may see a post are shown to the user before they make a post, accompanied by text describing who may see the post.
  • Timer Nudge: Users are given the option to edit or cancel a post for 10 seconds before it is published. This addresses the fact that regrettable behavior is often done "in the heat of the moment".
  • Sentiment Nudge: When potentially regrettable content is found in a post, users are given the aforementioned ten second countdown accompanied by the message "Other users may perceive your post as negative"
