Profit Expectations as a Source of Investment Volatility

A primary reason for the high volatility of investment spending is its strong dependence on firms' expectations of future profits. Because these expectations are subject to sudden and significant shifts due to new information, uncertainty, or changes in business sentiment, investment levels tend to fluctuate much more than other components of aggregate demand.
