Proposals for Research on the Effect of Diet on the Gut Microbiome and COVID-19 susceptibility

More research should be done using a variety of methods to investigate the relationship between dietary and microbiome effects and susceptibility to infection. These methods should be “large, adequately powered international studies that recruit COVID-19 patients and controls to collect clinical data, detailed dietary assessments, host genetics, immune phenotyping, and multi-site multiomic microbiome markers”. It is important that the approach is international because the sample should include diverse backgrounds, eating patterns, and environments. Additionally, the preventative and mitigating effects of high fibre, freshly fermented, and diverse foods should also be studied.
