Proposed Benefits of Cognitive Behavioral Therapy + Exercise

Combining CBT with an exercise component may be seen as less stigmatizing because it is widely accepted and understood as being a healthy lifestyle choice. Exercise alone has been shown to have multiple mental health benefits, including reducing anxiety and depressive symptoms. Including exercise as part of CBT intervention may provide an enhanced opportunity for clients to think about therapy concepts outside of session. Exercise may also allow individuals to practice skills learned during session, such as cognitive restructuring and mindfulness.
