NBGQ people may experience added obstacles when accessing gender affirming care when compared to trans binary individuals. This may be attributed to gender being assumed to be a binary concept in medical research (and by society as a whole) leading to a lack of cultural competency among providers.

NBGQ individuals have been found to be more compliant with routine physical healthcare, including pap tests and uterine cancer screenings when compared to binary transgender people assigned female at birth. On the contrary, other findings have shown NBGQ are less likely to have a family doctor and self-reported less access to gender affirming care (i.e., hormones).
