During the act of memory recall, a process known as reconsolidation, in which stored memories become reactivated, occurs. This process engages the hippocampus and prefrontal cortex regions, which are also involved in stress regulation; increased levels of cortisol (caused by stress) during this process, has been shown to impair subsequent memory expression as well.

The release of glucocorticoids, following the body's stress response, bind to receptors in the hippocampus (associated with memory functioning). Extended release of this hormone, brought upon by chronic stress, can compromise the structure of this hippocampus region.
