Protective membranes of the brain

The brain and spinarl cord are encased in membranes called the meninges. The dura mater is a tough outer part, the arachnoid is a webby substance that suspends the brain in cerebrospinal fluids, and the pia mater is the delicate membrane that adheres to the surface of the brain.
