Public Health Consequences of Vaccine Misinformation
The media's extensive coverage of the debunked link between childhood vaccines and autism has led to severe public health repercussions. Misinformation from these retracted studies fueled anti-vaccination movements, causing many parents to become hesitant about routine immunizations, such as the administration of oral vaccines. This widespread reluctance directly contributed to a resurgence of preventable diseases, as seen in the 22 measles outbreaks and over a thousand infections reported in the United States during 2019.
