Infections produce chemical compounds (pyrogens) that affect the hypothalamus' ability to regulate body temperature, causing fevers. During the fever, the hypothalamus causes vasoconstriction (minimize heat loss) and stimulates shivering (generate heat) to raise one's core temperature. During the crisis phase, the hypothalamus causes vasodilation and stimulates sweating to release heat.
