Radiographic Appearance of Pneumonia

On a normal chest radiograph (X-ray), the ribs and other bones appear white, while healthy lungs appear as a smooth, even black color throughout. When a patient is suffering from pneumonia, the accumulation of fluid and mucus causes a significant white cloudiness, known as lung infiltrate, to appear in the otherwise black lung areas on the imaging.
