Range of Potential Returns for a Lender in a Bilateral Loan

In a direct, bilateral loan, the lender is exposed to a wide spectrum of risk. The potential outcomes for the lender's return can range from a maximum gain equal to the full interest amount if the loan is completely repaid, down to a total loss of the entire principal if the borrower defaults completely.
