How someone may react to a stressor depends on individual differences (age, gender, etc.), education level, ethics, political beliefs, and creed. One's family environment may also play a role when looking at familial support, relationships, and economic level.

A stressor is any type of stressful/ significant life change in a person's life that may bring about an Adjustment Disorder in a patient. There are many different types of stressors and the way a person may react to one depends on a variety of factors.

Stressors can be broken down into different categories: desirable (promotion at work)/undesirable (falling sick) and entrance (getting married)/escape (death of a loved one). Some of the most common stressors include family conflicts, bereavement, occupational stress, and diseases such as cancer.
