Recognition of Sexual Trauma Symptoms Leading to the Term PTSD

By the late 1970s, it had become clear that women who had experienced sexual traumas, such as rape, domestic battery, and incest, often experienced the same set of symptoms as soldiers who had experienced combat trauma (Herman, 1997). This recognition led to the development of the term posttraumatic stress disorder, since these symptoms could happen to anyone who experienced psychological trauma, not only combat veterans.
