Dissociative Amnesia Reference

State University of New York at Albany

Amnesia refers to the partial or total forgetting of an experience or event. Dissociative amnesia is a specific form where an individual is unable to recall important personal information. This memory impairment is not due to ordinary forgetfulness but typically follows an extremely stressful or traumatic event, such as combat, natural disasters, or being a victim of violence.

These are the two types of dissociative amnesia:

* Anterograde dissociative amnesia
* Retrograde dissociative amnesia

Types of Dissociative Amnesia

Memory loss is the main symptom of dissociative amnesia, and it has various forms. Some patients may experience one form while others may experience multiple forms. These forms are:

* Generalized dissociative amnesia.
* Localized dissociative amnesia.
* Continuous dissociative amnesia.
* Selective dissociative amnesia.
* Systematized dissociative amnesia.

Forms of Dissociative Amnesia

Derived from the French word 'to flee,' dissociative fugue is a symptom of dissociative amnesia where an individual suddenly wanders away from home. During these episodes, they experience confusion about their identity and may even adopt a new one.

Dissociative Fugue

According to a study of residents in upstate New York communities, approximately 1.8% of the population experienced dissociative amnesia in the year prior to the study.

Prevalence of Dissociative Amnesia

The legitimacy of dissociative amnesia as a diagnosis is a subject of significant debate. Critics have pointed to a lack of empirical support, with some labeling it 'psychiatric folklore.' This skepticism is bolstered by evidence such as the absence of descriptions of the disorder in literature prior to 1800 and a sharp decline in scientific publications on the topic after a peak in the mid-1990s. In contrast, some research suggests the condition may simply be underdiagnosed. A study conducted at a psychiatric outpatient hospital, for example, found that nearly 10% of patients met the criteria for dissociative amnesia, implying that its prevalence might be higher than case studies suggest, especially within psychiatric populations.
