Medical education for students in Year 1 and Year 2 had already undergone curriculum reform to online platform and the current pandemic did not affect education for these students drastically. However, Medical education for students in Year 3 and Year 4 have traditionally been clinical with emphasis on in-person training. With current pandemic, majority of these clinical rotations have been canceled with some medical schools changing Year 3 into taking electives for Year 4.

Problems with current efforts include not being sustainable in the long run, the replaced components not satisfying clerkship requirements for medical students to graduate and go into residencies, and faculty not being able to develop educational curriculum due to large adjustments that they have to make in education and in personal lives.

The article concludes with potential solution, “grass-roots effort.” Author invites medical schools across the country to collaborate in bringing a total curriculum reform to fit current needs in times of pandemic.
