Relational Identity
Many described shaping their identities around the expectations of others rather than around their self-understanding. To maintain or satisfy relationships, they often downplayed or masked aspects of their ADHD that might be seen as disruptive. The prioritization of acceptance over authenticity highlights how stigma and social pressure can push individuals to sacrifice self-expression for belonging. Ableist environments restrict the space for neurodivergent identities, forcing adolescents to negotiate identity in ways that privilege conformity.
