Yan et al (2021) found through retroactively analyzing the consistency of childhood family routines that high levels had a positive relationship with high tolerance for uncertainty, and an inverse relationship with depression and rumination. Similarly, high levels of rumination were associated with the occurrence of depression.

Because it is the responsibility of the family environment to prepare developing members to adapt to other environments, routines prepare individuals with coping mechanisms for daily life, which has been linked to increased tolerance for uncertainty and resistance to rumination. 

Chaotic, disorganized, and uncertain family environments that did not establish routines, on the other hand, are associated with the incidence of depression even into adulthood.

Also known as perseveration, rumination is the repeated replaying, worrying, and reacting to past and future negative events. This behavior has been shown to evoke and maintain depression. From a family health perspective, rumination could be likened to a maladaptive mental routine.

Researchers recommend that familes establish clear, purposeful routines to encourage the development of protective psychological traits (regulation, self-control, self-efficacy, etc.) and function as an easily retrieved mechanism for tolerating stress in daily life. Because patients are often embedded in their family environment or retain many beliefs and behaviors from it, interventions focusing on routines is a cost-effective and high-impact way to promote healthy behaviors across populations.
