Risk Factors for Encopresis

Certain factors increase the risk of developing encopresis, including: a diet high in fat, sugar, and junk food; excessive consumption of soft or sugary drinks (making up most of one's liquid intake); inadequate water and fruit juice intake; insufficient exercise; reluctance to use public restrooms; stress related to family, friends, or school; and disruptions to a child's bathroom routine (such as the transition from summer break to a new school year).
