Risk factors for cannabis use disorder include unstable or abusive family situations, cannabis use within the immediate family, childhood history of abuse or the violent death of a close family member or friend, family history of substance use disorders, and low socioeconomic status. The easy availability of cannabis in many cultures contributes to the risk, while permissive marijuana laws in certain US states have reduced barriers to obtaining cannabis. Living in a state with legalized recreational marijuana increases the risk of cannabis use disorder.
