Robert Whittaker

Robert Whittaker (1920{}19201980{}1980) was an American ecologist who significantly advanced biological taxonomy by proposing a five-kingdom phylogenetic tree in 1969{}1969. He introduced the Fungi kingdom to the tree of life and created the empire or superkingdom level of categorization to distinguish between eukaryotes (organisms with membrane-bound nuclei) and prokaryotes (organisms without them).
