Role of Prokaryotes in Soil Fertility

Prokaryotes are vital to soil formation and stabilization. They decompose organic matter and form biofilms. In the rhizosphere, soil bacteria metabolize organic substances secreted by plant roots (such as acids and carbohydrates) and return the metabolic byproducts to the soil, forming nutrient-rich humus that increases soil fertility.
