Role of the Brainstem in Terri Schiavo's Reflexes

Although the parts of Terri Schiavo's brain that control thought, voluntary movement, and feeling were completely damaged, her brainstem remained intact. Specifically, her medulla and pons maintained her breathing and caused involuntary movements, such as occasional groans and eye movements.
