During this test, the examiner shows symmetrical images of inkblots. The subject is asked to interpret what they see in the image. Later the examiner/psychologist will interpret these answers in order to explain an aspect of the subject's personality or internal feelings.

Rorschach Inkblot Test

The Thematic Apperception Test (TAT), developed in the 1930s by psychologist Henry Murray and psychoanalyst Christiana Morgan, is a projective test where an individual is presented with 8 to 12 ambiguous pictures and asked to create a story for each. The narratives are believed to offer insight into the person's social world, including their hopes, fears, interests, and goals. The storytelling approach is designed to reduce resistance to revealing unconscious personal details. Despite being one of the most widely used projective tests, particularly for evaluating psychological difficulties in clinical settings, its validity and reliability are often considered modest to low.

Thematic Apperception Test (TAT)

The Rotter Incomplete Sentence Blank (RISB), developed by psychologist Julian Rotter in 1950, is a projective test where individuals are asked to quickly complete 40 sentence fragments. The test, which typically takes about 20 minutes, is designed to reveal a person's underlying desires, fears, and struggles through their one-to-two-word responses. Similar to a word association test, the RISB has distinct forms tailored for different age groups, including school, college, and adult populations.

Rotter Incomplete Sentence Blank (RISB)

Developed by Swiss psychologist Hermann Rorschach in 1921, the Rorschach Inkblot Test is a projective assessment that uses a series of symmetrical inkblot cards. A psychologist presents each card and asks the client, 'What might this be?' The client's interpretations are analyzed to reveal unconscious feelings and struggles. When standardized with the Exner system, the test is considered an effective tool for measuring conditions such as depression, psychosis, and anxiety.

The Contemporized-Themes Concerning Blacks Test (C-TCB), developed by Robert Williams, was the first culturally specific projective test designed for African Americans. Created to address the limitations of biased traditional tests, the C-TCB uses 20 color images depicting scenes from African-American lifestyles. Studies comparing it to the TAT for African American participants found that the C-TCB elicited longer stories, more positive feelings, and stronger cultural identification.

Contemporized-Themes Concerning Blacks Test (C-TCB)

The TEMAS Multicultural Thematic Apperception Test is a projective assessment created to be culturally relevant for minority groups, with a particular focus on Hispanic youth. The name 'TEMAS' is an acronym for 'Tell Me a Story' and is also a play on the Spanish word for 'themes.' This test employs images and storytelling prompts that are relevant to minority cultures to elicit responses.
