Runaway Environmental Collapse

Runaway environmental collapse describes a potential outcome where environmental changes trigger positive feedback loops, leading to an accelerating deterioration of the environment. In this process, small initial disturbances can produce much larger effects, driving the system further from a sustainable state. Dynamic models, such as the one for Arctic sea ice decline (Figure 8.27), are used to visualize and understand how a system can move away from a sustainable equilibrium towards such a collapse.
