Statistics have always been apart of sports but for baseball they've become the most accurate and useful. Many modern metrics don't give a good understanding of what's actually happening on the field, just the broader result. Sabermetrics track a player's quality through three categories: batting, pitching, and fielding. On-base percentage, earned runs, and value over replacement player are all popular metrics used to determine a player's contributing to a game. With the advancement of stat tracking and data science over the last few decades these metrics have become the center of how scouts determine what prospects can take the next step.
